On Thursday Jan. 19, 2006 students and staff alike all wondered if the annual all campus bon fire would take place due to some unexpected turns of weather. Around 11:30am that day the sky darkened and the snow clouds rolled in fast. By 12:00 pm everyone on campus saw snow falling fast and beginning to stick to the trees and ground. Immediately, students, staff and faculty, all started to worry that the bon fire would not be held. Despite off and on snow showers along with periods of hail the storm quickly moved out of Prescott. By 4:00pm clubs were ready to begin setting up in the activity center for club fair and the food preparations were well on their way.
By 4:45 students and staff made their way down to the lower field for the start of bon fire. The event started with the singing of the national anthem followed by the more important lighting of the fire. Many gathered around as members of the archery club shot arrows that would ignite the fire. With in a manner of minutes flames from the fire grew. With the fire burning students quickly started to eat the food prepared by chartwells. Chartwells served hotdogs, chips, potato salad, soda, hot chocolate and the all mighty smore.
While students ate they were given the chance to see and exhibition of the women's rugby team as they played sevens against the men's B team. Since the game was a fun game no score was really kept but each side performed equally well. Nicole Lovett captain of the women's rugby team felt "we need to work on tackling the B side guys team. However, it was a decent game and the ladies played hard for the start of the season. We just wanted to show the school what we are about. If any lady is interested in playing rugby they can contact me at 928-273-0059."
Not only did the Women's Rugby team provide the audience with a show the Air Force ROTC saber and Rifle teams also displayed their skills. However, the Dance Team managed to pump the crowd up the most. Despite having to perform on the wet ground the Dance Team had the crowd dancing right along with them. Advisor Rebecca Culley felt "the first performance was pretty well." Dance team member Jenna Berg went on to add, "For having only three days to learn, practice and perfect the dance for the bon fire we all did really well. Not to mention the weather almost caused our performance to be cancelled."
Additionally, students were given the chance to win free t-shirts, which were made just for the bon fire. Tina Blake Director of Student Activities was among the many staff members present at the Bon Fire passing out T-shirts. Tina talked with students and dance around commenting "the bon fire rocks." By 6:30 students and staff all started to gather on the softball field were the students attempted to host the world's biggest dodge ball game. The game lasted for almost a half hour. As students began to get out they quickly made their way to the Activity center were clubs were set up and ready for students to come find out what they are all about.
Inside the activity center clubs such as Alpha Xi Delta, Alpha Sigma Tau, Sigma Pi, Sigma Tau Gamma, Sigma Chi and Theta Xi were among the few set up and ready to explain to students the benefits of going Greek. Members of Women in Aviation and SWE were out and about explaining their club as well. A new feature offered at club fair was interviews with different clubs hosted by BCA member Brendan Carne. Many students came out to club fair and checked out what clubs were available to students. Additionally, club fair allowed the members of different clubs to catch up.
Despite the freezing temperatures students, staff and faculty, all came out and supported the Bon Fire and Club fair making both events another Riddle success.
