From 1972 to 2003 Americans trashed one trillion aluminum cans. The weight of this trash amounts to 17.5 million tons and the scrap aluminum that composes these cans is worth $21 billion in today's market. This is according to a report by the Container Recycling Institute, which also warns recycling is at its lowest point in 24 years. Imagine the resources that could be saved if a fraction of those aluminum cans were recycled.

If you ask most people if they recycle they will probably reply with an excuse that carries with it an undertone of guilt. Most people understand that recycling is a positive act, but fail to take the extra step to learn about their local programs. Fortunately for the Embry-Riddle community in Prescott, AZ this is no longer a problem.

Thanks to the Renewable Energy and Sustainable Living Society (RESLS) the Prescott Recycling program has been brought to campus. Currently there are three locations on campus where dumpsters are located for recyclable material. These are the Village parking lot, Cafeteria/Bookstore and the Flight Line.

Recycling could never be easier for residents of the Village. Members of RESLS distributed recycling bins to more that half of the rooms in the Village last week. Last semester residents were asked to volunteer to receive the bins with the responsibility to take care of the containers so future students could use them. The plan is to eventually allow anyone who wants a bin to have one. A laminated list of rules is conveniently provided with each bin to make it simple for users to know what they can and cannot recycle.

There has been positive support from the Embry-Riddle community to the addition of the recycling dumpsters around campus. Currently RESLS has additional bins and is eager to involve more of the campus community in the program. If you are interested please contact a member of RESLS for further information. Their E-mail is erau.resls@gmail.com. With further support RESLS will be able to expand upon the current recycling program. Just think of all the resources you will be saving. What good is 17.5 million tons of aluminum if it is just being piled into landfills? Make a difference and start recycling today.
