Embry-Riddle SWE members traveled to Salt Lake City on March 3.
Traces of the winter games can be found scattered around the city with monuments and memorials.
Members visited the Gateway Mall located just few minutes from the Radisson Hotel the official conference location. The Gateway Mall has over 95 stores ranging from Ambercrombie and Finch, Brookstone, and even the Banana Republic. The Gateway Mall is also home of the Clark Planetarium which includes an interactive museum and an IMAX Theatre. "We saw Deep Sea 3-D at the IMAX theatre and being an experienced scuba diver I thought it was very realistic," said Dalia Guizar, SWE member.
The Sonora Region B section of SWE includes Southern California, Southern Nevada, Arizona, Utah and New Mexico and contains collegiate members from over 30 universities.
The SWE conference included tours, workshops, meals, jewelry making, networking, and the popular career fair. The career fair was very important to SWE members who were attending the conference. "I attended the conference mostly for the opportunity of internships and co-ops," said SWE member Chelsea Dutenhoffer, who was looking forward to the spring Career Fair at Embry-Riddle that was cancelled.
The career fair expected over 20 companies ranging from Northrop Grumman, Sandia National Laboratories and Raytheon Missile Systems. Members could even submit resumes into a resume bank and each company would receive a burned CD of all the attendees' resumes.
"We are looking to expand diversity in our company with women engineers," a member of Microsoft Corporation stated during a conference workshop. Company's were also passing out the usual promotional gadgets like light pens, laser pointers, CD holders, and Hill Air Force Base was also passing out small FM radios that could be used for running.
Students as well professionals were busy all day Saturday with workshops and networking events. Some workshops included Communications and Gender Gaps, Diversity and Inclusiveness, Conflict Resolution, and even Turning Research into Reality.
