Library staff host Scholarly Speaking event

On March 9, 2006, students and faculty gathered together in the Academic Complex executive conference room to acknowledge those individuals whose works have been published throughout the year.

The event is organized every year by the library staff. Scholarly Speaking is designed to praise those that have had works published and to encourage other faculty members to become involved in getting their works published.

Chartwells provided a lovely desert spread along with tea and lemonade for those in attendance to enjoy. Additionally, the library staff displayed the works of that faculty who have been published.

John Jenkins of Academic Support opened the event by acknowledging and thanking those who were "able to come out and shore in this wonderful moment."

Following Jenkins, Sarah Thomas of the director of the Prescott Library, Media and Aviation and Safety Archives spoke about why the library works so hard to present scholarly speaking." It is important that we acknowledge those whom have written works since many works help to bring grants and other positive attention to the university."

Following that Sarah presented those authors in attendance with beautiful pens and gift certificates from Branes&Noble.

Every department of was represented with alt least one person who has been published. Some departments even collaborated on works which were published such as the Engineering and Humanities Departments. Along with the major departments being represented acknowledgements went to Bill Smith of Safety for his book on Poetry and Andy Fraher the Associate Dean of students for his work International Education on campus.

Following the presentations Beth Luey the director of Scholarly Publishing Program at Arizona State University spoke about "Scholarly Publishing in the Twenty-First Century."

During her speech she touched on how many university require at least one publication before a candidate may apply for tenure. Additionally, she touched how those individuals involved in research programs allow university gain revenue which intern may be used to help benefit other departments at a particular university.

Overall, scholarly speaking is designed to pay tribute to those individuals whom are remaining active in their fields of study along with encouraging others to get involved with in researching a particular topic.

Many of the works which were displayed at the event may be picked up at the Prescott Campus Library along with a complete list of those whom have been published.
