The Board of Trustees voted on changes to bylaws on March 31 which eliminate voting rights for student and faculty representatives. Restrictions were put in place during the 2005 summer retreat to eliminate the student and faculty representatives from the voting members of the Board of Trustees.

Students at the Daytona Beach campus reacted to the measures by holding a "Voice and Vote" rally organized by SGA in support of their vote. SGA officials gave speeches and students were invited to sign postcards.

When the Board of Trustees met, Daytona Beach SGA President Sarah McCook made a motion to review the Board of Trustees bylaw concerning specific committee privileges. Article X, section 4 says, "Faculty and Student Delegates shall be invited to participate as members of the Academic, Student Life, Development, and Facilities and Capital Planning committees of the Board." McCook's motion was to give student and faculty members voting rights.

"Although we [as students] do not have a vote on the general board, we do have a vote on committees. 99 percent of the time when a committee makes a recommendation, it was passed by the general board giving students the opportunity to still have a vote in the direction of the Board," said McCook.

Students, however, will not be invited to participate in the Finance committee meetings. The Finance committee meets and discusses tuition rises. Chief Financial Officer Eric Weekes has reinforced his open door policy with the SGA Presidents to discuss the budget and where money is going.

"I believe that Weekes thoroughly reviews and researches tuition hikes and takes into account students and does what he can so as not to put the burden on students," said McCook.

According to an interview in the Daytona Beach newspaper, the Avion, McCook felt that the meeting was, "less adversarial than when Dr. George Ebbs was president."

The board will be holding their summer meeting in June followed by a fall retreat in Prescott.

"I have full faith in the current administration to continue increasing communication with the students and believe, although I don't necessarily agree with all their decisions, that a majority of the board members do value the students' input and ability to serve on the board," said McCook.
