Donations from Wal-mart and Pawn Palace helped with the prizes and gave a lot of incentive for the students to sign up and play. Each team donated $50 to sign up and be entered into a raffle to win prizes ranging from stereos to Planet Beach Tanning gift certificates. The winning teams received trophies and medals along with $50 dollars for first place. "It's a great fundraiser for Big Brother's Big Sisters on top of being a lot of fun," said participant Danny Lacore.
The 5th Annual Mud Volleyball Tournament took a month to plan and coordinate. Alpha Xi Delta arrived 9:00 a.m. to dig and fill the mud pits and set up two volleyball nets. "It's a lot of work," said Raelin Schneider, President of Alpha Xi Delta, "but totally worth it when we give the check to the charity."
Music from car stereos greeted participates as they signed up and filled out waivers at the registration table. Sunscreen was handy along with cold drinks and snacks to keep the teams ready to play.
Many of the teams taped up their feet with duct tape to avoid hitting rocks while diving and splashing in the mud. This safety measure was used by a lot of the guy teams but sorority Alpha Sigma Tau wasn't afraid of any rocks and went in barefoot.
To start off the tournament the Lords of Mud went up against the Society of Physics Students. After the teams reached eight points they switched sides and the first team to 16 points with a two-point lead would take the win and move up to the next level. After a few good volleys and lots of mud, the Society of Physics showed their stuff by winning 16 to 8. "This is our community service for this semester for Air Force ROTC," said Lords of Mud member Charles Kilchrist, "so why not make it fun."
The next teams to battle it out was fraternity Theta Xi and the Honor Student Association. The Honor Student Association didn't want to get dirty so a lot of balls were let go and Theta Xi walked away with a win. "We lost a billion to three," said Dillon Foight, Honor Student member, "next time we are going to sacrifice our bodies to win."
