The summer of 2006 brought many changes to the campus. Some were clearly noticeable; others were not. These changes are a part of an ongoing campus improvement project, a project that was started a while back, and will continue for some time to come.
Many of the improvements that came over the summer may seem small in nature but they all add up and contribute to the overall improvement of the campus. Improvements such as repaving of several parking lots on campus are just one example. Another new addition to the campus from over the summer is the large white lettering on the sides of the major buildings, like the King Building and the AC1. The new Aerospace building and the DLC also received this improvement.
One project that was also completed this summer was the addition of direction signs along the roads and the campus directory signs around campus. Also the sidewalk leading from the AC1 to the ramada by the pool has been completed, and even has a bridge over the wash.
A few of the buildings on campus also received some work over the summer. Hall four was essentially gutted and rebuilt, much in the same manner that hall three was the summer before. The King Engineering building also received several improvements over the summer. The main doors were replaced, and several of the doors and walls have been repainted. The floors throughout the building were replaced, either with tile floors or with new carpeting, and many of the labs received new chairs.
So what is next? Currently there are several buildings being demolished on camps in preparation for the new library. The library, to be named the Chris and Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Library and Learning Center, is planned to break ground in December of this year. It is expected completion date is not until January of 2008, though the two story building promise to be an excellent addition to the campus.
Also expected to break ground this December is the new dining facility. Set to be placed on the land between Hass Commons building and Hall 5, it is also expected to be completed in January of 2008. Chartwells is a major contributor to this particular project and will run the dining facilities in the building.
Another new facility planned for the near future is a ramada and restroom facility at the lower athletic field. This project is in the bidding stages, and will not be completed for some time.
In relation to the building of the new library, the demolition of the buildings adjacent to the quad area will leave an approximately two acre are of land to be landscaped. It is because of this that University Construction and Planning office is looking for suggestions of things that members of this campus might like to see done with that area. So if you have an idea, email it to Laura Blackwood.
The improvements to Embry-Riddle are far from complete. There are many more plans in various stages of progress and as more information becomes available, it will be released here, in the Horizons newspaper.
