On Sept. 22, the B'rith Shalom Temple held Erev Rosh Hashanah services in the DLC. This was the first Erev Rosh Hashanah service to be conducted on the Embry-Riddle campus by the B'right Shalom Temple. The Jewish Student Association and their advisor, Dr. Murray Henner, facilitated the move from the usual place the Temple meets to the DLC. This was done to give the Temple a larger forum for their members to come and worship. Elliot Korona, the president of the JSA, said that holding this event in the DLC was "an opportunity [for students] to learn about the Jewish faith."

The DLC was packed with Temple members, Embry-Riddle students, and professors. Upon entering the DLC one's ears would be flooded with the sound of people giving the standard new year's greeting of "L'Shanah Tova," Hebrew for "for a good year."

As one entered further, a book entitled "Gates of Repentance" was handed out to the attendees. The book is filled with prayers and is used for the holidays of both Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

Dr. Henner gave the introduction to the service thanking the greater Jewish community for coming to Embry-Riddle for Temple services. Dr. Henner also said that it was a true "mitzvah" (good deed) that this service was being held here. After he was seated the Rabbi entered the building carrying the Torah. The Torah was placed on stage in what is known as the Ark. After the Torah was placed in the Ark the curtains to the Ark were closed and the service began.

There were many songs and different prayer readings. Some of the prayers were read in English and some in Hebrew. Some passages were read in both. The Rabbi blessed those who had family members who were sick and those who had family members that were recently deceased. The Rabbi also gave a sermon on the Psalm 23. After the service was over all were invited for apples, honey and cake. These foods were deliberately chosen so that everyone would have a sweet new year.

It seemed like everyone who attended the service, both Jews and non-Jews alike, thoroughly enjoyed the Temple service. Attending this service was truly a valuable and cultural experience.

In case you missed this event the Temple B'rith Shalom will be holding Erev Yom Kippur services on Oct. 1 in the DLC at 7:30 pm. L'Shanah Tova!
