A Cessna 337 Skymaster crashed into power lines at approximately 9:30 a.m., Sept. 2 resulting in three fatalities. Sandra Rogers, 66, her grandson Justin James Clement, 14, and Gerald Wayne, 59 were killed in the incident. Rogers was at the controls when the crash occurred. Both adults died at the scene of the crash and the teenager died after being airlifted to a Phoenix hospital.
Initial reports indicate the plane took off from the Prescott Municipal Airport but had trouble climbing. It turned to the north and began to slowly descend at which point it clipped a power line. It nosed over and hit the ground, exploding on impact according to an Embry-Riddle student who witnessed the crash.
The plane crashed into power lines approximately mile north of Pioneer Parkway, just east of Willow Creek Road. The accident cut power to 5,600 homes in Prescott and Prescott Valley, as well as all of the Embry-Riddle campus. Arizona Power Service managed to restore power to all of its customers by 12:40 p.m.
The multi-engine Cessna 337 Skymaster, tail number N1893M, is registered to William Goudreault of Lake Havasu City. The Yavapai County Sheriff's Office handed the investigation over to the National Transportation and Safety Board. The NTSB has not released its preliminary report as of press time.
In an unrelated incident, a second plane's landing gear collapsed at the Prescott Municipal Airport. The aircraft proceed to go off the end of the runway. There were no casualties or major injuries from the accident.
