Greetings. I hope the fall semester is going well and the students are enjoying themselves. The Embry-Riddle staff and faculty are dedicated to the success, health and well-being of our students. There are facilities available to assist you with your needs. The campus health clinic has caring professionals who can provide you with information on a variety of health related issues. Chartwells has brochures on diet and nutrition and are happy to discuss these with you.
Studies suggest that freshman gain on average fifteen pounds their first year at college. Think about it. As a student you sit in class, sit in front of your computer, read at the library, and sit around with your friends talking or watching television. At best one walks a few minutes to class or to Chartwells for another meal. ERAU has worked hard to provide an outlet for students to be physically active and exercise. The Eagle gym and weight room are favorites along with the soccer field and track. There is a walking trail behind the Thumb Butte Complex and the outer road is marked for distance every tenth of a mile.
Remember to run/walk against the traffic flow when using campus roads. If out at night wear light colored clothing with a reflective vest or belt. It is good to let someone know when you are running or taking a walk, especially if you are out on your own. Let them know where you will be and the approximate time you plan on returning. Prescott weather can change quickly, be prepared when going on a day hike. Wear good shoes, take along plenty of water, and bring a working flashlight, a cell phone, and a windbreaker or sweatshirt. Stay on designated trails and be aware of the wildlife in the area. Scorpions, snakes even javelina are fairly common in this part of Arizona. Try to hike with a friend or group.
Bicycle riding is an excellent form of exercise and transportation but not without risk to the rider. Your bike should have reflectors on the front and rear also spoke reflectors provide side visibility. It is best to have a lighting system and a rear view mirror is helpful when on local roads and in heavy traffic. As a reminder, it is against ERAU policy to ride your bike on campus sidewalks; please get off and walk it.
When walking on campus walk on the right side of the sidewalk when possible, this allows those walking in the other direction room to move. Be respectful of others, don't walk four abreast as this takes up the entire walkway forcing others to stop or step off to the side. Try not to congregate in front of building entrances or at busy intersections. This blocks the path of those with a different agenda, often in a hurry. Be courteous and use common sense. Part of the University experience is learning to interact with people.
If you drive, please drive carefully. Allow a few more minutes to reach your destination and just slow down. Also if you have not done so, register your vehicle with the safety department to avoid getting a ticket. Accidents happen, be safe and be healthy, take care of yourself. Eat well, drink plenty of fresh water, exercise and enjoy the outdoors.
