Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Prescott campus, recently remodeled their weight room and training room. The original facility was a leftover of Prescott College.
The Athletic Department chose to remodel the facility after reviewing the numbers of visitors and wanted to improve access and upgrade older obsolete equipment.
The remodeling expanded the weight room by 275 square feet, upgraded the flooring and doubled the size of the training room. This will allow more users and decrease crowding during peak hours.
Due to changes in technology, the Athletic Department is looking to acquire new equipment for the weight room.
"We are here to serve the students, so stop by," said Athletic Director Larry Stephens, who has 27 years of experience at Embry-Riddle.
The new training room will be open from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm. It is open to all students, with the least busy times for use being 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.
The last year has seen over 12,000 visitors to the facility, although that number is underrepresented, for many do not register when they arrive. Registering when using the facility would improve the chances for new equipment.
Students and professors are not the only ones who can use the weight room. Alumni, fire fighters and former professors also use the facilities. However, due to the multiple entrances, unapproved individuals do enter the facility. Options for controlling the entrance to the weight room include eliminating an entrance or installing Eagle Card checkpoints to enter.
The long term goal is to build a new facility designed from the start for student needs, rather than an improvised facility. It could contain a fitness center, recreational facility, climbing wall, spa and a snack bar.
The justification for the new facility comes from Larry Stephens again, "Now is the time for students to find a recreational outlet for their health, students already are already challenged mentally, now is the time to be challenged physically, and if you have ideas come talk to us."
The improved weight room and training room should help improve access to fitness opportunities. Time will tell if new equipment will be added.
