Women's Volleyball plays game against Eagle Alumni

Issue date: 10/27/06 Section: Sports
In keeping with the spirit of October West the Women's Volleyball team participated in their sixth annual alumni game. Coach Katy Meyer introduced each team giving updates on the alumni and what they have been up too since graduating ERAU. Following that, members Alana Greenwalt and Kensie Oakley sang the national anthem while the Air Force ROTC Honor Guard presented the colors.

With the colors out of the room each team meet at center court to wish the other good luck and from there the real battle would begin. With the current Eagles having a strong record to defend of no loses to the alumni. The game started and senior Amber Page would waste no time in attacking the alumni with her explosive jump serve. Many of the alumnae appeared to not be ready for a jump serve; however, they managed to keep the ball in play. The Eagles quickly began showing the alumnae that they would need to remove the cobwebs from their shoes if they wanted even the smallest chance of scoring fifteen points in the game.

The alumnae were able to catch a spark of life from Erin Mickelsen who blocked a spike attempt from Angela Woo. The block was enough to get former outside hitter Sara Benko motivated with a set from one of her teammates Benko spike held enough punch to prove that old dogs may still have game.

The game was close for the first match with a score of 25-21 in the first game. The crowd was on their feet with excitement since the alumnae held a four-point lead. Yet the current Eagles remained calm and stuck to their game play, quickly scoring two more points and forcing the alumnae to take a time out with the score of 25-23, the alumnae leading.

The game turned into a back and forth slug match. The score was 28-28 and everyone watched with enthusiasm. Despite the defensive efforts by the alumnae the current Eagles took game one with a score of 31-29.

Each team switched sides, grabbed some water and prepared to take the court for game two. Having already won the first game, the current Eagles wasted no time getting back on the court and overpowering the alumnae. Leading with a score of 17-15 the Eagles looked like they were going to put the alumnae away in two games. One fan and former ERAU student Hermes Garcia had this to say about the alumni game: "I think each team is playing great so far and it looks like it will end soon."
